This year marks the 25th anniversary of The Goonies, which makes me feel terribly old. It’s still one of my most beloved of childhood movies and I have fond memories of watching the film on VHS over the course of many summer vacations, often followed by a round of the surprisingly good board game based on the film.
Now, a new game based on the film is being released by a Spanish team of homebrew developers. The Goonies ‘R’ Good Enough isn’t a ROM hack but a completely new game which more closely follows the events of the film than either of the two games produced by Konami back in the eighties.
The only catch is that the game has been developed for the MSX computer system, long ago left obsolete. If you happen to have a working unit, you can pick up a copy (in fancy, attractive packaging) for $45. I’d like to play it because it looks a lot like the other titles, which I adore, but I suppose it’s just not in the cards. No way I’m going to try and track down an MSX just for nostalgia.
Still, pretty damn neat.
