Someone has money to burn
Halo 5: Guardians had the biggest Halo launch yet, according to Microsoft, “with more than $400 million in global sales of [the game] and hardware.” It’s the fastest-selling Xbox One exclusive.
With that in mind, I’ve been curious about how well REQ Packs are selling. Many people are fine with earning these packs and the ensuing in-game items by just playing multiplayer matches and saving up points, but there’s also the option to buy them outright with real-world money.
The microtransactions must be doing all right, because a portion of their proceeds go toward the Halo World Championship prize pool, and as of today, $500,000 has been raised.
Microsoft says that 45 million REQ Packs have been “acquired,” though we don’t know how that figure breaks down in terms of purchases made with in-game currency versus real money.
