Just like in real life, fire is deadly in Helldivers 2. However, frustrated players have complained that it’s too deadly; something developer Arrowhead Game Studios agrees with since it plans to introduces fixes for it.
Over on the Helldivers 2 Discord channel (as spotted by PCGamesN), Arrowhead’s community manager Twinbeard directly responded to criticisms about how fire works. It can be frustrating enough whenever a sudden fire tornado randomly spawns and takes you out, but even so much as touching an ember can quickly kill you.
Twinbeard acknowledges that this is “ridiculous, or at least wrong,” which is why Arrowhead is looking over the fire systems as a whole, including “DPS (damage per second), DOT (damage over time), the host thingie, not dying in two secs from just touching it, etc.” Twinbeard couldn’t give an estimate for when such fixes will arrive, only adding they’ll be done “in parts,” which means the way fire works is something that will be updated over time rather than be fixed with a single patch.
Presumably, such fixes will be applied to both the fire tornadoes and the flamethrowers wielded by some of the Automaton’s Hulk units. While it’ll be nice for these to be made less devastating, Arrowhead likely won’t nerf them too much; fire still needs to pose some kind of threat. A new armor type that offers some fire resistance would make for a nice addition and be warmly received by players, but Twinbeard hasn’t mentioned anything about adding new content to counter fire damage.
Hopefully, these aforementioned fixes will arrive sooner rather than later, but Helldivers 2 currently has other issues the studio is looking at. The new Ground Breaker armour, for instance, was added to the game with the wrong passive, and one of the new ship module upgrades isn’t working properly either. Helldivers 2 has been suffering from bugs and other such errors since launch, but it’s clearly doing something right for it to remain incredibly popular.
