If you were expecting a new Helldivers 2 patch to drop today, don’t. In fact, developer Arrowhead Game Studios can’t confirm when its next patch will arrive, with community manager Thomas ‘Twinbeard’ Petersson saying the team wants to “take some more time for this one.”
When asked on Discord (as highlighted on Reddit) when players can expect the next patch, Twinbeard only answered with “When it’s done,” adding that future patches may potentially come out less frequently. He explained that the team has felt it’s been putting out patches too often, which risks making it difficult to “maintain the quality standard we want and you deserve.”
Twinbeard’s not exactly wrong. Helldivers 2 has seen a near-constant stream of patches since its February launch to address bugs and glitches as well as add new content to the game. As an ongoing live-service, this regularity does seem like it can only be a good thing, but some feel that Helldivers 2 has been growing and updating too quickly, and pushing out so much so often is affecting the quality of the updates.
Twinbeard also explained how patching a lot can “easily disrupt work flow and takes more resources than you might think.” This is why the studio is opting to slow things down a bit and stretch the next patch out, “hopefully with a good result.”
Players would need to adjust not having patches drop at least once a week, but it may be beneficial for Helldivers 2 in the long run, and allow for more meaningful updates and content additions. It’s strange, though, that what seems like a pretty significant notice for players has been delegated to the Discord channel. There’s no mention of this on the official Twitter account or Steam page, with it falling to fans to spread the word around.
