Since the game was released, the Helldivers 2 community has been flooding social media and the community Discord servers or Subreddit with dozens of memes. Now, one of the most iconic has finally been rendered using in-game assets. A Naked Gun clip that pokes fun at Sample hoarders.
All Helldivers 2 players understand the pain of collecting Samples. While they’re easy to spot and pick up, it’s holding onto them that quickly becomes an issue as swarms of Terminid bugs or Automaton mechs overwhelm and kill them. Upon death, players drop everything they’re holding, including those Samples, meaning they need to be gathered again. Thankfully, other players in a squad can pick up lost Samples and ensure the entire team benefits from them, but it comes at the cost of their attention and, sometimes, the lives of other Helldivers.
Helldivers 2 player priorities have been immortalized thanks to a fantastic Naked Gun meme render
The Naked Gun meme Helldivers 2 players have been using to make fun of others and themselves, when they pause shooting in an intense firefight to grab some Samples from the battlefield, is the clip of Leslie Nielson finding his lucky coin while shooting down his foes. Now, that clip has been turned into an almost completely accurate video using in-game assets.
Posted by creator Atrio the Animation Man on Twitter, the only thing the video gets slightly wrong is that it shows a Helldiver grabbing Super Credits or Warbonds as opposed to Samples. In the replies to the post, some players have pointed out how it shows the wrong item, which Atrio has addressed.
“As some people have been pointing out, this isn’t an accurate depiction of credit finding in game haha. Helldivers don’t drop Super Credits. If they did, because who doesn’t have their wallet/purse on them, This would 100% be a Brasch Tactics video. Try not to kill each other.”
Of course, there will always be those who take even deliberately silly videos like this far too seriously. In this case, though, given the satirical nature of Helldivers 2, I reckon anyone calling out the animator for using the wrong item is doing it in jest. The game’s community might be serious about Malevelon Creek, but it’s generally serious about very little else.
The reason players love this video and the clip it’s based on so much is that it’s totally accurate. I’ve had messages about being kicked from the squad during my sessions because I’ve run off as the Pelican approaches to take us away just so I can grab our dropped Samples. While we all like to poke fun at players like me, those Samples pay for ship upgrades, so don’t think I don’t know you’re all doing it too.
