Here’s Resident Evil 4 reimagined as a 2D side-scroller in the Doom engine

There’s nothing quite like a new take on a classic game, and Resident Evil 4 should be no exception. We’ve already encountered enough mods for the remake, so it’s nice to see the 2005 version of Resident Evil 4 still getting some love in 2D form.

This one comes courtesy of DooMero over on Doomworld (spotted by PCGamesN), and is essentially a sort-of “demake” of Resident Evil 4 which turns the third-person horror title into a 2D shooter.

A recent video uploaded to the modder’s YouTube channel shows 30-minutes of action from the project. Indeed, we get to see Leon Kennedy, as he was in the original RE4, making his way through the village in glorious side-scrolling action. The twist here is that it’s being created in the Doom engine; GZDoom to be precise.

So when do we get to play it?

At the moment, there doesn’t appear to be any release date for what’s being called Resident Evil 4 2D. DooMero says they’ve been working on the mod since 2016, but had to take a break. All we can really say is that a demo is hopefully coming soon. We just don’t know when.

It’s pretty impressive to see something like RE4 being recreated in Doom. It kind of goes to show just how versatile the latter continues to be, not to mention how creative the modding community can get.

It’s a bit of a new take on what many would consider to be the best Resident Evil game ever. Admittedly, going to 2D side-scrolling does give it an antiquated kind of charm, but it’s just one more way we can admire Leon’s golden bangs.
