Highguard’s launch today is just the beginning of its lifespan that Wildlight Entertainment hopes will be lengthy, with a lot of content already planned and ready to drop every month.

Seasonal battle passes in the three-vs-three “PvP raid shooter” are called Warchests, and the first one is totally free for all players at launch. This Warchest includes 44 items, including 11 legendary skins, and cosmetics that include characters, mounts, weapons, and more.

Highguard devs told me at an early access event last week that future Warchests will be priced around $9, and more importantly, they will never expire. A Warchest purchase is permanent, meaning the rewards won’t be lost and players won’t have to suffer from FOMO if they can’t play during one Episode, which is what Highguard calls its seasons.

“Launch is a huge moment,” said Dusty Welch, Wildlight co-founder and CEO. “But our team builds franchises that stand the test of time, and we’re in this for the long haul. Success for us is a healthy, growing global community that’s enjoying the game—and a team that’s energized by engaging with players and surprising them with new experiences over time.”

Two weeks after launch, the first new Episode will begin, bringing with it a new character, map, mount type, and the addition of a ranked mode. From then on out, there will be new content to look forward to every month. Content is already finished or in progress until the end of 2026.

Episodes will last for two months, with an update every month, including new content drops containing characters, maps, bases, game modes, weapons, and other additional items. The game’s shop will also have cosmetic-only items, with nothing at launch priced at more than $20.

“When Chad [Grenier – co-founder] and I formed the studio, we knew we were going to make a shooter and a live-service,” Welch told me at the pre-release event. “How do we build an organization, capabilities, pipelines, external relationships, and a mindset in this company that is about live-service? And so, we are deep in development, if not done, on that roadmap and feel really good.”

Highguard launches for free today on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, so give it a try yourself to see if it’s something you feel like investing time in.
