House Republicans made a blog post today arguing for tax reform. While we’ll stay away from the politics of the situation, we’re here to call out their ability to fact check video game history.

According to the post, the House GOP seems to think that Nintendo was founded in 1985. In what I can only assume is an attempt to “reach the hip youngins,” they try and relate tax reform to The Legend of Zelda of all things.

The Legend of Zelda series is Nintendo’s best-selling video game franchise enjoyed by more than two generations of gamers. The action-adventure game was released in 1986, only one year after Nintendo’s founding in 1985.

And you know what else was released in 1986? Yeah, you do. The last major reform to the American tax code was signed into law in 1986.

While the former is true, a quick Google search could’ve easily informed them that the latter isn’t. Nintendo was founded in 1889, close to a hundred years before the post claims. Granted it was a card manufacturing company back then, but it’s still worth noting.

The post has since been taken down, but Twitter immortalizes all internet mistakes.

Just goes to show you a simple Google search can save you a world of trouble.
