Staying faithful to the original
The new Dead Space, a remake of the original Dead Space, is out now on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. This refurbished, upgraded version of the original sci-fi survival horror shakes up a decent chunk of the experience. But while the flow changes, the structure of the Dead Space chapters remains the same.
There are 12 chapters in total in the Dead Space remake, just the same as the original. While this might seem fairly inconsequential to newcomers, long-time Dead Space fans will probably know why this number and the chapters are significant. So yes, it is as it always was. Here’s the full list:
- Chapter 1: New Arrivals
- Chapter 2: Intensive Care
- Chapter 3: Course Correction
- Chapter 4: Obliteration Imminent
- Chapter 5: Lethal Devotion
- Chapter 6: Environmental Hazard
- Chapter 7: Into the Void
- Chapter 8: Search and Rescue
- Chapter 9: Dead on Arrival
- Chapter 10: End of Days
- Chapter 11: Alternate Solutions
- Chapter 12: Dead Space
While the number stays the same, the way the chapters flow has significantly changed. Previously, chapters marked hard in’s and out’s for different areas. Motive’s take on Dead Space treats them more like narrative book-ends, while not always creating hard stopping points or cut-offs. This is because the USG Ishimura, in Motive’s Dead Space remake, is much more open and has side-quests that may require some back-tracking. Many chapters cut off a bit differently compared to the original, or have different ways of moving between them altogether.
How long is the Dead Space remake?
Those 12 chapters of Dead Space will roughly run you anywhere from an hour to a little more to beat, but there are also some side quests to tackle too. These may be fairly quick runs back through areas you’re already familiar with, but they’ll still eat up some time.
Overall, the time it takes to beat Dead Space will depend largely on your difficulty and how many repeat runs you might need through an area. In our experience for review, it took us a little over 13 hours to beat the Dead Space remake on Medium difficulty, without any New Game Plus benefits. With each subsequent run though, it will probably take you less time.
