What is a mentor?

A mentor is a player who, after meeting certain requirements, has a crown next to their character’s name. The role is meant to signify them as a guide to new players, with titles for Battle Mentors and Trade Mentors available. They also have access to the Novice Network, a limited chat channel, and can invite new or returning players into it.

Both Battle and Trade mentors have their own unique requirements. The battle Jobs offer either a PVP or PvE icon variant to the mentor crown, while Trade teachers can choose between crafting or gathering symbols. If you want to help with all of the above for the slightly bigger crown icon, you must complete both the Battle and Trade Mentor requirements.

FFXIV Mentor Requirements

Becoming an FFXIV mentor is not an easy task. There are multiple requirements that must be met for each type of mentor, and it is not going to happen overnight.

To become a PvE mentor, players must:

  • Complete 1,000 instanced dungeons, raids, or trials
  • Complete the level 90 Tank role quest “A Path Unveiled”
  • Complete the level 90 Healer role quest “The Gift of Mercy”
  • Receive 1,500 player commendations
  • Complete at least one of the three level 90 DPS role quests
    • Melee DPS role quest “To Calmer Seas”
    • Physical-Ranged DPS role quest “Laid to Rest”
    • Magical-Ranged DPS role quest “Ever March Heavensward”

To become a Trade mentor, players must:

  • Catch or gather 300 collectables
  • Craft 100 collectables
  • Reach level 90 on at least one Gathering class
  • Reach level 90 on at least one Crafting class

Once done, head to see one of the Smith NPCs, easily located in each main city beside the Innkeeper. They’re the same NPC you talked to for access to Hall of the Novice.

How many commendations are needed to be a mentor in FFXIV?

As mentioned, you’ll need a whopping 1,500 player commendations to become a PvE Mentor in FFXIV, but don’t let that number intimidate you too much.

Tips for earning Commendations

Becoming a PvE Mentor harder than becoming a Trade Mentor because of one thing – commendations. There’s no shortcut here — it takes a while and you have no control over whether people actually give them at all, let alone whether they choose to give them to you.

My only advice is to be kind to others in duties, especially new or returning players. Remember how out of your depth you felt when you were just starting to play; when Sashtasha had you on the edge of your seat rather than slumping into it. New players will appreciate friendly advice or conversation. The commendations will come. Eventually.
