Keeping your animals in the Vivarium happy is a delight, but what would make it even better is to breed beasts in Hogwarts Legacy, so more can call it home. If you want to master the art of mythical animal husbandry, you can get started as soon as you make it to the winter season. Here’s how to breed beasts and creatures in Hogwarts Legacy.

When can you breed beasts in Hogwarts Legacy?

The process of breeding beasts in Hogwarts Legacy begins with the “Foal of the Dead” quest given to you as the snow falls down upon Hogwarts and after you’ve finished the second trial in the main questline. Get the quest started by speaking to the house-elf Deek in the Room of Requirement, and then make your first stop in the magical village Hogsmeade. Spawn at the South Hogsmeade Floo Powder fast travel spot, and then head down the southern street to get to Tomes & Scrolls.

While you’re there, make sure to purchase the Breeding Pen spellcraft for 1,000 Gold. If you need some cash, feel free to sell your unwanted gear. After this investment, you’ll need to find both a male and a female Thestral. If you have the Deluxe Edition, you should already have one that is female.

To catch the Thestrals, follow the game’s marker on the World Map. According to Hogwarts Legacy, the most convenient Thestral Den is in the swampland southeast of Pitt-Upon-Ford and north of the East North Ford Bog Floo Powder location. Once you’ve arrived, you’ll notice that the Thestrals have different colored skin, depending on the gender they are. The males have more of a purple tone, while the female Thestrals are greener.

Like any other beast in Hogwarts Legacy, try to use the Disillusionment spell so you can get to them without the Thestrals escaping. Next, cast Glacius to keep it immobilized. It will then fall to the ground, and you can use the Nab-Sack quickly to snag it.

Once you’ve caught both Thestrals, head back to the Room of Requirement, where Deek awaits your return. Tell him that you’ve prepared the spellcraft and Thestrals. He will instruct you on what to do next, and then the Swamp biome will be summoned.

Go inside the swamp biome and cast the Conjuration spell. Now, select the Breeding Pen under “Beast Items.” You’ll need to spend 15 Moonstones to bring it into action. With that, you’ll need to release your Thestrals from the Nab-Sack. You may need to retrieve the female Thestral if you’ve already placed it in another biome. To bring it back to your Nab-Sack, press the square button (X on Xbox) on the “Beast Inventory” menu.

Once both of the Thestrals, male and female, are in the swamp biome, it’s time to use the breeding pen. There’s a brown sign by the side of the gate you can interact with. Choose the animal you want to breed and then you’ll have to wait 30 minutes for them to do their thing.

Once the breeding has concluded, it will have offspring you can keep around in the Vivarium. However, you can sell them to Brood & Peck. Once you visit the Hogsmeade store, talk to the shopkeeper and press the right shoulder button to get to the “Sell” menu. For example, if you breed a bunch of Mooncalf and sell them to Brood & Peck, you’ll get 120 Gold for each one.
