As you proceed into Rivington in Baldur’s Gate 3’s third and final act, you may come across a homeowner screaming bloody murder about a family of refugees who have been squatting in his empty home. As infuriating (and as realistic) as that might sound, this is only the beginning of a quest that will grind your gears and make you lose a little bit of faith in the population of Baldur’s Gate.
In order to accept the Investigate the Suspicious Toys quest, you’ll need to first head for Arfur’s Mansion in Rivington. It’s kind of hard to miss given Arfur is screaming bloody murder at a poor refugee outside. But, if you have voices turned down or off for some reason, you can find this house just east of the Circus of the Last Days as you proceed down the main road of Rivington.
Here’s how to complete the Investigate the Suspicious Toys quest in Baldur’s Gate 3.
An explosive treat
Interacting with Arfur himself will let you begin the mediation process, but the initial steps of this quest are made much easier if you side with the squatters. You don’t have to do this, but if you want to make things a lot simpler, try to convince Arfur to not only fire his bodyguards and hire you, but then convince him to let the squatters live in his house and find another place to live. If successful on both counts, he’ll depart for the Sharess’ Caress, where he’ll remain until time comes to see him again.
Enter Arfur’s Mansion and head straight to the back, where you’ll find a locked door, and now I’m certain you’re seeing why it’s better to send Arfur away — if he isn’t here, he can’t catch you snooping. Behind this door is a room with a hatch that leads to the basement.
I hope you have a party member that’s good at disarming traps, because there are a lot down here. You are gonna want to head for the other end of the room, where you’ll find a letter of blackmail that begins the quest proper. It’s then that you’ll want to head to the Requisitioned Barn, which you’ll find a short walk to the southeast. Find an NPC named Manip Nestor and ask him to see inside the barn, or just use Invisibility to check the northeast quadrant for a crate of teddy bears rigged with explosives. You’ll need to disarm them, and also convince anyone who might see you that you’re not responsible for them.
It’s then that you’ll need to head for the Sharess’ Caress, which is located along the street leading to Wyrm’s Rock Fortress. If you’ve already been there, you can just use the South Span of Wyrm’s Crossing waypoint, which is located right next to the Sharess’ Caress. Once inside, head straight and to the right past a curtain into a private room where Arfur is having a grand ol’ time.
Your goal here is to convince Arfur to spill the beans about his illicit scheme involving teddy bears and fireworks. If successful, he’ll reveal that he doesn’t know who provided him with the explosives, but he knew they came from a place called Felogyr’s Fireworks in the Lower City. If by this point you’ve received the Lower City Pass, then head there. If not, do what you need to in order to get to the Lower City.
Your target is, of course, Felogyr’s Fireworks, which is located to the south of Sorcerous Sundries. If you’ve been to this area before, you can use the Heapside Strand waypoint, which is right next to the fireworks shop. If you managed to get Arfur to squeal, he’ll have given you a password that will grant you access to the second — but not the third — floor. On the second floor is a special explosives vendor that you can purchase from if you’re so inclined, but what we’re really curious about is on the third floor.
But, no matter what you do, you won’t be allowed to visit the third floor without a fight. You can cast Invisibility on yourself and explore all you want, but that’s not going to complete this quest. No, the only way to fully complete this quest is to put a permanent end to Felogyr’s Fireworks. It’s not necessarily the hardest fight, though you might not believe me given the sheer number of enemies to defeat.
It becomes a lot easier when you remember — it’s a fireworks shop. If you use fire-based attacks like Fireball, Flame Strike, or Fire Bolt (just remember to get out of the way first) then you’ll be able to explode all the fireworks on the top floor. This wipes out a sizable number of your total enemies. It’s easy to doubt that this is the right move because some of your enemies are Flaming Fists, but remember they serve Gortash now, so no matter what may have happened in the past, they’re morally ambiguous now.
