Risk of Rain Returns is tough, and, like with many tough games, few things are more comforting than knowing your progress won’t be lost. For some, you may want to find the Risk of Rain Returns save file location, and keep it safe. It’s the one risk to avoid.
The save file locations of Steam games are typically nestled fairly deep in your install drive. Most tend to get their save files siloed somewhere in the Steam install folder, and it’s never clear which save is for what game. But finding out isn’t all too difficult, which I’ll explain shortly.
Find the right folder for the Risk of Rain Returns save file location
To find your Risk of Rain Returns save file, open up your install drive (typically C) and follow these directions:
- Program Files (x86)
- Steam
- userdata
You should see one or more folders with the name of some bizarrely unspecific number. Go through the folders and look for a folder named ‘1337520’. Open it, enter the ‘remote’ folder, and you’ve made it. The ‘save.json’ file is your Risk of Rain Returns save. Though Steam cloud saves are fairly reliable, you may want to safeguard that little file just in case. Of course, some may want to locate the data for other purposes, such as modding. I don’t judge (that much).
How to find the correct save file with a game ID in Steam
You may be wondering how I came up with the number ‘1337520’ earlier. This is the Steam App ID for Risk of Rain Returns. To find the App ID, navigate to the Steam Store and search for the game for which you want to find the save file. The number in the hyperlink after ‘app’ is the game’s ID. Use this knowledge wisely, and don’t forget to bring the app manifest file (in the ‘steamapps’ folder) when moving games across drives.
