How to fix FPS drop in MW2 and Warzone Season 4 Reloaded

With fast-paced, energetic, and twitchy FPS games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone, you want the fastest frame rate possible. This will ensure you have the opportunity to battle your opponents with a fair chance, instead of taking losses due to lag or frames-per-second (FPS) drops. Unfortunately, many players may experience suboptimal performance due to reasons they may be unaware of.

Here’s what you can do to fix your FPS in MW2.

FPS drop in MW2 and Warzone, explained

Your frame rate determines how smooth the gameplay is for you in games like MW2 and Warzone. On console, you want the bare minimum of 60 FPS, if not more, to ensure you are keeping up with the rest of the players online. On the other hand, PC players ideally want 120 FPS or more.

The problem is that FPS drops occasionally happen in MW2 and Warzone, resulting in frame rates below those intended numbers. This can happen for a couple of reasons, but it’s particularly an issue for PC players.

The first reason could be because of a new seasonal update like Season 4 Reloaded, where it was a common issue for many players. On the other hand, it could be an issue with your current settings or even hardware. The bright side is there are a few ways to fix these frame rate issues.

First, you need to figure out what the problem is. If a lot of players are reporting problems like this on social media, Reddit, etc., chances are that it is on Activision’s end.

In this case, the problem is largely out of your hands, which sucks, and requires Activision to push out a new patch to resolve the problem. I suggest reaching out to Activision Support for help if that is the reason why.

Otherwise, here are some quick ways to possibly help your FPS drops out if it is a problem on your end:

  • Verify the game’s files: You can do this by right-clicking the game, heading to Properties, and scanning and repairing files there.
  • Motion Blur: You can toggle this setting the in-game menus. Many players dislike it, but you can see if changing it helps your FPS.
  • Switch the game to Fullscreen Exclusive in the settings, not Fullscreen Borderless.
  • Under the Shadow & Lighting settings, change your Spot Cache to Ultra.
  • Turn your Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling in your computer’s Display and Graphic settings on or off. Simply switch to whichever one is not currently on.
  • Update your video card drivers.
  • Manually close any background applications using Task Manager.
  • Turn off On-Demand Texture Streaming in the game settings.
  • Lower overall graphics settings for the game.
  • Final option is to reinstall the game. I only recommend this if you have tried every other solution first.
