If this year’s Rising Phoenix reward isn’t cutting it for you, it’s the perfect time to go for the FFXIV Kamuy of the Nine Tails mount. The fierce beasty is Final Fantasy XIV’s big prize for securing the other Kamuy rides from Stormblood’s extreme trials. You can farm those fights or take a shortcut, but either way, the grind isn’t too bad in 2023.
Below, we’ll explain how to unlock the Kamuy of the Nine Tails from FFXIV’s Stormblood expansion. That includes a quick explainer on making the most of the MMO’s limited-time anniversary event.
Kamuy of the Nine Tails: Checklist
To unlock the Kamuy of the Nine Tails, you’ll go toe-to-toe with the extreme versions of Stormblood’s biggest bosses. That includes Susano, Lakshmi, Shinryu, Byakko, Tsukuyomi, Suzaku, and Shinryu. Once you’ve completed their normal difficulty counterparts, speak to the Wandering Minstrel in Kugane to unlock beefier encounters.
With every defeat, there’s a small chance the boss drops one Kamuy fife used to summon the mount. You’re also guaranteed a boss token, and 99 of those tokens can be exchanged for the corresponding mount by speaking to Eschina in Rhalgr’s Reach. The mounts are easier to farm now, so hopefully, it doesn’t come to that.
Remember, as of September through October 2023, you can unlock the FFXIV Kamuy of the Nine Tails mount by only farming the Moogle Tomestone event. Keep that in mind if you don’t feel like grinding high-end encounters.
Either way, here’s the wolf mounts you’ll need for Kamuy of the Nine Tails:
Farm Stormblood Extreme Trials
- Reveling Kamuy Fife: The Pool of Tribute (Extreme)
- Blissful Kamuy Fife : Emanation (Extreme)
- Legendary Kamuy Fife: Shinryu’s Domain (Extreme)
- Auspicious Kamuy Fife: The Jade Stoa (Extreme)
- Lunar Kamuy Fife: Tsukuyomi’s Pain (Extreme)
- Euphonious Kamuy Fife: Hells’ Kier (Extreme)
- Hallowed Kamuy Fife: The Wreath of Snakes (Extreme)
As a note, these are easier to tackle through Party Finder. Before jumping into the high-end duties, unsync the instance and bring a few friends. Since the content is older, you don’t need eight people to kill some of these bosses, but it’ll sure make the grind go faster. Also, you’ll want your best gear equipped—unsycing the fight means your Endwalker item level should steamroll their Stormblood-era stats.
Grind the FFXIV Anniversary Event
The FFXIV Moogle Tomestone event also offers an easy route to securing the Kamuy. Until Patch 6.5, all seven Kamuy mounts are available from the event vendor for 30 Irregular Tomestones of Pageantry each. For those still hunting them all, it’ll cost 210 irregular tomestones total. If you missed the event, don’t panic. FFXIV often hosts these with a Kamuy mount or two available, though it’s a first to see them all at once.
FFXIV Quest: A Lone Wolf No More
Regardless of how you got them, collecting all seven wolves gives unlocks your path to the Kamuy of the Nine Tails. Speak to the News Hawker (X:11.5, Y:9.9) in Kugane, and he should greet you with the quest A Lone Wolf No More.
Teleport to Yanxia via the Namai Aetheryte, and you’ll have just a couple of interactions here before a final cutscene. It’s time to mount up with your very own auspice—unlock the Kamuy of the Nine Tails mount by using the Fabled Kamuy Fife quest reward. And yes, that is just the Foxy Lady Fate boss model, but at least the Lakshmi mount looks a little like Okami’s Amaterasu?
