How to catch octopus in Cult of the Lamb

The fishing mini-game in Cult of the Lamb

Let’s get you your very own octopus

There’s a lot going on in Cult of the Lamb. Your followers can’t do anything without you commanding them around the compound, you’ve got to get out and gather supplies to keep them alive, and oh yeah, killing a literal god is also on the itinerary. It’s enough to weigh on even the most hardened of sadistic figureheads, and sometimes it’s nice to just get away from it all. If you ask me, there’s nothing quite like soaking in the ocean breeze and fishing to ease the stress of an overworked cult leader. Of course, there’s the added bonus of catching fish you can use to feed your followers, like octopus, for example.

It’s simple: go fishing

If you’re looking for octopus in Cult of the Lamb, the good news is that it’s a pretty simple task that mostly comes down to patience. After progressing through the tutorials and going out on your first few crusades in Darkwood, you should encounter a character while out on your exploits known as The Fisherman. After this encounter, you’ll be able to visit the first of five locations outside of your cult, known as Pilgrim’s Passage. Fishing will now be unlocked, and get cozy in that spot next to the dock, because it’s the only place you can actively fish in the game.

Once you’re there, the waiting game begins. Just keep fishing, and fishing, and fishing, and eventually you’ll catch an octopus. Some types of fish are simply more rare than others, so it’s going to come down to the luck of the drop rate. It really is that simple.

There may be another way…

There is still a way to greatly increase your chances of catching an octopus to the point that it all but guarantees it: the Ritual of the Ocean’s Bounty doctrine. You’ll have to level up your Sustenance doctrine to level three, but this ability is worth the grind, trust me. Upon performing the ritual, you’ll catch double the amount of fish you usually do for two days, and the amount of special fish you’ll catch will increase significantly (like octopus, for example). Ocean’s Bounty will also give your followers a +10 faith and drop two tuna immediately after it’s performed.

As one last note, you can also get fish during your crusades, either via random encounters with characters like the chef Rakshasa, or through modifiers that turn any gold you would have picked up on your run into fish. Don’t expect too much out of these circumstances, though, because they’re already rare as it is — the likelihood of these dropping an octopus is even slimmer. Even so, never say never.
