If you’ve ever gotten the feeling that your Baldur’s Gate 3 party needed a bloodthirsty little gremlin who just loves creating chaos and causing pain, then then Larian’s got the perfect familiar for you. The pesky BG3 Quasit summon, Shovel, is a delightful little oddball, and she can become a permanent fixture on your team.
You can only recruit Shovel in Act 1; she’s available via the Scroll of Summon Quasit and tucked away in a coffin underground. Mechanically, Shovel is only as useful as the Find Familiar spell allows her to be, though her invisibility ability makes her moderately more useful than the vanilla Familiar options. So if you’re eager to add the summon to your ranks, here’s how to get Shovel in BG3, along with how to keep the little fiend on your team for good.
Where is the BG3 Shovel summon?
To find Shovel in BG3, head to the Blighted Village waypoint. Enter the Apothecary Shop beside the waypoint, and make your way to the basement via the hatch behind the shop’s front counter. From here, pull the lever hidden behind some barrels that opens up a secret path leading to the Necromancy of Thay.
You don’t need to go all the way to the necromancer’s hideout. Once you’re in the cavernous room filled with caskets, you’re in the right place. Open the muldering casket on the southern wall closest to where you entered the room. Don’t touch any of the others, or you’ll wake the undead and start a fight that you may not be prepared to win at this early point in the game.
Inside the casket, you’ll find the Scroll of Summon Quasit. Using it outside of combat will summon Shovel and unlock the achievement Rude, Crude, and Full of Attitude. You’ll quickly find out that Shovel’s deepest desire is to cause violence and misery wherever she goes, but since she views you as her new master, she’ll do whatever you say – including changing her name to Fork or Basket. A psychotic killing machine has never been so adorable.
How to make Shovel a permanent companion
To make Shovel a permanent member of your party, you need a Wizard, Warlock, or Sorcerer on your team. Before you use the Scroll of Summon Quasit, you can have a Wizard party member copy the scroll into their spell book, giving them permanent access to the level one spell Find Familiar: Cheeky Quasit.
The other option is to use the scroll, then have a Wizard, Warlock, or Sorcerer talk with Shovel. She’ll be very excited about speaking with a “spell shite,” and she’ll permanently add her Find Familiar spell to that party member’s prepared spell list.
You can actually do both of those options and end up having Shovel’s spell available for two different characters at once. Just have a Wizard copy the scroll, then use the scroll to summon Shovel and have her speak with another one of her preferred classes. You might not want to summon her around polite company, but she’s capable enough to come in handy during certain encounters.
