Thanks to Starfield‘s realism and complex dialogue system, it’s possible to build quite close and personal bonds with your companions. If you’re into exploration and uncovering the secrets of the universe, you’ll probably spend your time with Sarah Morgan, and if you’re into being a gunslinging space cowboy, then Sam Coe is your guy.
At a certain point, you’ll be faced with a tough decision regarding your companions and it may have you wondering whether it’s possible to save all your companions from death. This guide will detail what happens and who you can save.
Warning: Heavy spoilers for Starfield beyond this point.
A High Price to Pay mission in Starfield – a deadly dilemma
As you progress through Starfield‘s main story, you’ll gain new companions. At one point, there’ll be a problem with The Eye, which is the satellite orbiting Jemison. This causes some of the Constellation members to head there.
All seems well until the mission titled A High Price to Pay. The folks at The Eye are attacked by the Hunter, who is a mysterious Starborn. The crew tries to hold their own, but they’re quickly overpowered. You’re at the Lodge in New Atlantis when this all goes down, and while trying to gain contact with The Eye, you’ll hear from the Hunter who informs you that he’s on his way.
Noel grabs the artifacts and runs away with them, but that leaves you with two choices – either stay at the Lodge and defend it, or head to The Eye and protect your friends there. It is important to note that you cannot save all your companions. At least one will die. You can, however, choose who dies.
How to save your companions from death in Starfield
It’s going to be a tough choice regardless of what you do. If you stay at the Lodge, one of your companions at The Eye will die. Conversely, if you race to The Eye, someone at the Lodge is going to die. Your choice will have consequences, and it’s not just a trick – the character that dies will be gone until you begin Starfield‘s New Game+. Hence, if Sam Coe dies, for example, his daughter Cora is going to hate you.
At present, it appears that going to The Eye allows you to save the character you’ve bonded with most. Staying at the Lodge will save the character you’ve spent the least amount of time with. If you want to save a character, simply go to the location that character is during the A High Price to Pay mission.
If you stay at the Lodge, you’ll have to battle it out with the Hunter, and you should be warned that it’s a tough battle. Go to The Eye and you’ll find your companions there. They’re battered but they’ll survive. After saving your friends, you’ll have to head back to Jemison and escape with the rest of the crew on your spaceship.
Bethesda games are known for how immersive they are, and this is achieved in part by ensuring that your actions always have consequences. A High Price to Pay is one of those moments that have a significant impact on how the rest of your playthrough will pan out. Though you can’t save all your companions, you can decide which are spared by making the right moves.
