Modern games handle progress in varying ways. Some use save points, others are permadeath and run-based. Enshrouded does things a little differently if you’ve never played a survival game before, which can fool you into thinking you’ve lost progress.
Does Enshrouded save your progress?
When you first reach the outdoors in Enshrouded, you’ll see a red light in the distance. The natural inclination is to journey there directly first, but if you try you’ll fall down a mountain. Hence, you’ll have to navigate some ruins first.
Die along the way, and you’ll find yourself back at the beginning. However, if you make it through the sinuous pathway and decide to call it a day, you may find yourself wondering where to save your progress. Alternatively, you could die shortly after entering the ruins. You’ll respawn outside the ruins, ready to try again with your surviving gear intact.
Did you make it to the end of the first ruins and still then die, or decide to take a break? Rest assured, all is not lost. There is a Return Beacon at the entrance to the ruins and it contains all your gear. Grab your stuff and you’re good to go. There is no need to physically save your game, and in fact, the option isn’t there at all.
It’ll take less than an hour or so after beginning the whole thing, but you’ll eventually gain the ability to create flame altars where you will respawn with your gear and character upgrades. Treat the movable flame altars like hubs where you can recoup and re-strategize after a loss.
What happens when you die in Enshrouded
When you die at first, you’ll be thrown a little behind where you currently are. This doesn’t mean you need to start all over.
Enemies will resurrect but you’ll be fine because you also have your weapons and the rest of your gear which is a huge plus. Progress far enough and you’ll be able to create a flame altar where you respawn after dying.
You can also extinguish your flame which will leave you at risk of the Shroud in addition to attacks. Furthermore, your items placed will be lost.
Does Enshrouded have permadeath?
It appears you can’t permanently die in Enshrouded. Yes, you can lose all your gear which would feel like a restart if you did it early enough but in every situation, you’re respawning not dying permanently.
Enshrouded doesn’t make the effects of dying too bad, which gives you the chance to explore without too much anxiety. Don’t be afraid to die – the consequences won’t ruin your playthrough.
