Teach your dog some new tricks
In Pikmin 4, you collect different types of Pikmin and use them to overcome obstacles, battle enemies, and rescue Castaways. It’s a lot of work, but fortunately, you’re joined by a cute dog named Oatchi who can help you out in several ways. After collecting enough Pup Drive, you can also upgrade the dog, making it even more capable of tackling tasks.
This guide will explain how to upgrade Oatchi the dog in Pikmin 4.
How to upgrade Oatchi in Pikmin 4
Pikmin 4 shakes up the franchise by introducing the adorable sidekick named Oatchi. Although you don’t start with your furry friend at your side, the dog does join you during the first few minutes of the game. Once you’ve collected a few more cadets and made your way to the S.S. Beagle, you’ll be ready to upgrade your sidekick.
To upgrade Oatchi, speak to Shepherd – she’s the lady with the long hair and stripes under her eyes. She’ll train the dog and teach it a few new tricks, though you’ll have to spend Pup Drive to make it happen.
Pup Drive is accumulated by rescuing Castaways and Leaflings. You’ll usually find the stranded folks in underground caves, so start your hunt there. You can also earn Pup Drive completing Dandori Battles and Dandori Challenges. You’ll unlock these battles by talking to Leaflings, and they have players racing to collect items the fastest.
Though it may be tempting to rush any enemies that block you on your path to collecting Castaways, be careful to not expose Oatchi to too much danger. If his health is fully depleted, he’ll be sent back to the base to recover, leaving you to explore with only your Pikmin at your side.
What Oatchi upgrades are available in Pikmin 4?
The upgrades make Oatchi a more useful partner. For instance, the Buff upgrades allow Oatchi to transport heavier items, Chomp increases the dog’s attack skill, and Rush shortens the time taken to charge up for a rush attack.
You don’t need Pup Drive for all upgrades. Some of the skills, like Jump and Dig, are learned by naturally progressing through the game. Once the dog has learned all levels of a skill, consider it mastered.
Pikmin are extremely helpful when exploring, but they can’t replace Oatchi who can do a host of tricks and tackle large foes. Take good care of the dog, and he’ll always be at your side when venturing through unknown territory.
