Raising a cult to destroy The Bishops of the Old Ways in Cult of the Lamb is hard work. So can you do it with a friend? Is Cult of the Lamb multiplayer?
No.
[Update: Oh, hey, I was wrong. On June 7th, 2024, Massive Monster announced that a free DLC update will launch on August 12. The key feature of the Unholy Alliance update is 2-player co-op. The second player will join The Lamb as The Goat, and it appears that they can join in with all the usual activities of tending to the cult and going on crusades. I will update this again once there is more information.]
From a narrative perspective, that would be somewhat strange. The lamb is resurrected by The One Who Waits after being sacrificed and given the Red Crown to help them raise a cult. It would strike me as strange if there were two figureheads of the cult.
Narrative peculiarities aside, it could be done if secondary players were cast in the role of cult members. Or just by ignoring the narrative entirely. It just could be done.
However, it wasn’t. As an action rogue-lite, there would be a lot of balancing considerations to be made, and Massive Monster is a smaller developer. It just wasn’t a priority, and I think it would just be more difficult to implement now, as disappointing as it might be to some players. Personally, I’m not a very social person and don’t play multiplayer much, but the option has never hurt me.
Furthermore, Massive Monster hasn’t stated any plans to add multiplayer. Likewise, a glance at the Steam Discussion boards suggests it’s not a massively wished-for feature. Cult of the Lamb was simply built with singleplayer in mind, and that is how it remains.
