After being announced in July 2022 and delayed in August 2023, it looks like the planned remake of Lollipop Chainsaw is switching gears. Dragami Games president Yoshimi Yasuda announced as much on Twitter, saying they’ve “changed the game design of RePOP from remake to remaster.” Without sharing any details, Yasuda added that this decision was based on “requests.”
The recent delay of Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP was put in place to provide “the best possible quality experience.” Originally planned as a remake and set for sometime in 2023, Dragami Games then changed that window to summer 2024. The original game by Grasshopper Manufacture served as a collaboration between Suda 51 and James Gunn. It launched on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 back in 2012.
Oh, Juliet
So, why exactly is this changing from a remake to a remaster? Dragami Games made a point of addressing concerns over changes in the past. Shortly after the announcement, Yasuda reassured fans, saying they don’t plan on changing the story or aesthetics in the remake. That included pushing back against “baseless assumptions” that the team wanted to change protagonist Juliet’s design. Then there was the whole question about censorship, which Yasuda said would be addressed in negotiations with platform holders.
Basically, the more fans asked, the more Yasuda attempted to assuage their fears, noting that they plan to keep everything as close to the original as possible. Now they’re taking things one step further with the move from remake to remaster. The only remaining sticking points are all those licensed songs. Yasuda previously said they were unable to include 16 of those songs. We’ll have to see what else is planned for the remaster as further details are divulged.
