The puzzling platformer Mario vs. Donkey Kong is heading to Switch. Nintendo confirms today that Mario vs. Donkey Kong is arriving on February 16, 2024.
The Game Boy Advance puzzler uses a toy-like aesthetic and focused on more puzzle-focused platforming. According to the trailer description, this is an “updated version” of the game. It looks like it’s a remake of the GBA version, which is a welcome option compared to some later iterations.
Alongside the solo puzzle solving, there’s also local co-op to under take, as Mario and pals contend with Donkey Kong’s levels. As DK has run off with all the clockwork tools, it looks like it’s up to Mario and pals to get them back.
Per the trailer, observing and acting will be a key part of the game, as players move through the level trying to spot keys and carry them to the door around the myriad obstacles. Mario vs. Donkey Kong also has a new look, with smoother visuals that remind me of the Super Mario RPG remake.
We don’t know too much more at the moment, but it’s cool to see Nintendo revive this handheld-era that pits Mario and Donkey Kong against each other. It’s the oldest rivalry in gaming, and we should be watching them duke it out more.
