Buddy cop pitch: one’s a flying dude, the other’s a brainwashed assassin!
Uh, remember that report that Marvel Studios was going to make their own shows for Disney’s streaming service? That’s still happening, it seems. While initial reports pointed to limited series based on characters like Loki and Scarlet Witch, Variety has the scoop that another will star Captain America’s buddies, Falcon and Winter Soldier. The report claims that Malcolm Spellman, a writer for Empire, will pen the series.
These series are said to be six to eight episodes long each, and /Film seems to believe that Vision will appear in the Scarlet Witch series. These shows will be under the supervision of Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios, rather than Jeph Loeb and Marvel Television, who is behind shows like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Daredevil, Runaways, and even X-Men shows like Legion and The Gifted. The only MCU show that Marvel Studios has been involved with thus far was Agent Carter, being based on a “Marvel One-Shot” short film.
This report comes after some mishaps with Marvel Television, with both Iron Fist and Luke Cage being abruptly canceled only a full week apart. Those were under the jurisdiction of Netflix rather than Disney, so one has to wonder if Marvel Television wants to migrate their shows to Disney’s streaming service as well. With the MCU TV offerings being split amongst Netflix, ABC, Hulu, and Freeform, perhaps putting all of them under one umbrella would make things easier.
As for this Sam Wilson/Bucky Barnes show, I’m quite excited about the idea. Making the safe assumption that both Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan will reprise their roles, such a show would allow the two to show off their chemistry a little more. Their press tour interactions are wholesome and fun, and the two finally got some quality screentime together in Captain America: Civil War. But with Chris Evans hanging up his Steve Rogers costume after the fourth Avengers film, one has to wonder what this news means for the possibility of either character taking the mantle.
Along with, well, other stuff that happened in Avengers: Infinity War.
