If someone were to ask me where I’d like to first hear Metallica’s new single, the answer would be simple: “Nowhere.” But the idea of any band (even the aging metal pioneers, who haven’t really put out an album I’ve liked since the early 90s) premiering a new single as a playable song in Rock Band has me intrigued.
In a recent Rock Mountain News article, Brian Crecente pulls some interesting tid bits out of MTV’s senior vice president of home entertainment, Al DeGooyer. In the article, entitled “With ‘Band’ in hand, MTV eyes evolution,” DeGooyer talks about releasing new music weekly for the game, and relationships with established and up-and-coming bands.
“There are a couple of things we’ve committed to, one of them with Metallica for example,” he told Crescente. “They’ve reserved the right to give us their first single from their new album for the game.”
What remains to be seen is whether this will be used as a tool for marketing (free content?), or if we’ll have to pony up cash to hear/rock along with some new music. But Metallica? Part of me was hoping Justin Timeberlake would drop his new joint in the game, but I guess I’ll take what I can get.
