After over fifty years, ending in a sort of drawn-out drama not unlike watching a goldfish flop around amidst the broken shards of its shattered bowl, there will no longer be a company called Midway Games. As of Monday, July 13th, the company name will be changing, following its acquisition by Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment. That’s all that appears to be changing, at least as of this point. Development continues on Mortal Kombat 9 as normal. No word yet on what the studio is going to be called as of Monday, but speculation suggests that it will probably just fall under the new parent company’s moniker.
It’s really quite a shame, as the Midway name is such a good one. It’s evocative of leisure-time activities and gives the sense of being on a boardwalk or at a carnival but without all of those sleazy gypsys or grungy panhandlers. I’m sorry to see it go.
