Yesterday, I reported a story from British newspaper The Guardian about Midway Newcastle’s two week deadline: if they don’t find a buyer by the end of the month, they’ll have to close up shop. In that article, the fact that the game Midway Newcastle has been working on for three months was unannounced was pretty clear. In fact, studio chief Craig Duncan mentioned that they’re still trying to pin the game’s story down: “Which authors are we getting to help write the story and character arcs?” he asked.
Imagine my surprise, then, when I read today on GiantBomb that Develop had revealed Midway Newcastle’s new game, Necessary Force, complete with a trailer and, presumably, a storyline and character arc.
Necessary Force is what would happen if Rorscharch from The Watchmen got his own game: violent and gritty, Necessary Force is about a detective who goes way above and beyond the call of duty to save his city. It sounds a bit cliché, but the promise of ultra-violence (there’s a torture scene with an iron!) and its distinct style (assuming the game looks anything like the trailer) should be enough to distinguish it from all the other open-world games on the market.
Given their financial straits, I’m sure that Midway Newcastle is hoping to drum up some publicity with their new trailer and flashy new website — a little good press would do a lot to encourage potential buyers, and I’m more than happy to oblige. I’ve always had a soft spot for Midway since I grew up playing Mortal Kombat and NFL Blitz, and I’d hate to see them fold now.
Hit the jump to see the trailer.
