Miyamoto is ‘always looking to challenge Mario Galaxy and do another 3D action title’

The team can only do so many projects

The last time Nintendo designer Shigeru Miyamoto spoke about the possibility of another Super Mario Galaxy, the team was busy with Super Mario 3D World and physically couldn’t “make both at the same time.” But more Galaxy, he said, could happen at a later date. The dream was alive.

More recently, Eurogamer spoke to Miyamoto about the same topic. “[A new Mario Galaxy] is always in discussion,” he said. “But even with Mario 64 there was a lot of feedback about motion sickness with the 3D or maybe us making it too difficult.” That’s why Nintendo stuck with New Super Mario Bros. for so long — “anyone can play that.”

“We’re always thinking, is there a middle ground where people who do enjoy the 3D worlds of Galaxy and those who enjoy New Super Mario Bros. can both enjoy it? We’re always looking at those opportunities,” Miyamoto said. “On the other hand, me and [Yoshiaki] Koizumi-san, director of Galaxy, are always looking to challenge Galaxy and do another 3D action title. However we can’t make so many games at once in parallel.”

With upcoming Nintendo projects like the newly-confirmed Pikmin 4, we’re increasingly left wondering if the game in question will land on Wii U or wait until the next platform, NX, is ready. Miyamoto noted that the current console is “good enough in terms of hardware performance” — that “it is more the workload of the team” holding them back — but also said “there will be a lot of opportunity” for different styles of games “as the hardware technology gets better and advances.”
