When I look back at Super Mario Bros 3, I have fond memories. It’s still one of my favorite platformers. But its creator, Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto, feels a little embarrassed when he looks at it these days.
“I look back and play some of these games and there are a lot of places where, to be honest, I’m a little embarrassed,” he told Techland. “I look at Super Mario 3, and was like, ‘This was it?! This is what we thought was good enough?'”
Dude, it’s fine. Yes, it was a little weird. But all of your games are weird. Still, it was a killer game. Oh, what? You already knew that?
“I do have new understandings of that work,” he said. “The balance in that game is what it needed to be at that time. It really was. And so, even seeing all the limitations, I’m very happy with what we created and I wouldn’t change it.”
Yes, it was fine. It’s a classic. There are other Mario games to be more embarrassed of.
