Nintendo continues to show that they don’t give a rat’s ass about following trends, and I think it’s fantastic. While Capcom is working to make the next Dead Rising appeal to the Call of Duty fanbase and Namco Bandai wants to make the next Dark Souls a “AAA” title, Miyamoto is playing with stuffed animals while talking about hitting a giant dog-bug directly on the eyeball. This is how he wants to sell you on Pikmin 3. For better or worse, he hasn’t changed a bit.
I haven’t heard anything from Nintendo about gimmicks or non-play-related marketing bluster this year. Other than the fact that every first-party Wii U game I’ve seen on the show floor so far has off-TV play, it’s been all about how the games looks and how fun they are to play. It will be interesting to see if “just playing a fun videogame” is something that sells this holiday season.
