Miyamoto: Wii Music is ‘a new kind of musical instrument’

In a roundtable session with several media outlets, Nintendo’s developer extraordinaire Shigeru Miyamoto laid out the details on his latest work, Wii Music. GamePro had some highlights from this session, and it seems that Shiggy dropped some highlight-worthy bullet points.

Miyamoto likes other games like Guitar Hero and Beatmania, but he thinks of his game as less of a “cover band” experience and more like a performing one. He says “My goal wouldn’t be to try and lull people to join the best cover band, but rather, to let them move beyond that rather basic level of music training.”

The Wii Music track list came up in the discussion. Miyamoto defended it by saying that they were aiming for a casual appeal, and that many of today’s top songs didn’t have chord progressions conducive to Wii Music.

Finally, Miyamoto said “I don’t think it’s right to call Wii Music a game; instead I think a better way to describe Wii Music is that it’s a new kind of musical instrument.”

Really? If so, it’s the least musical musical instrument I’ve ever played!
