Molyneux can’t ‘think of anything’ exciting coming in 2009

Every time Peter Molyneux opens his mouth, I wince. It’s not that I don’t like the guy. I love him in that non-kissing, less passionate way. The wince is because I know he’ll end up saying something that he doesn’t necessarily mean.

Molyneux recently spoke to the BBC (via GI) about 2008’s best games and the problems facing the industry in 2009. He praised titles like Grand Theft Auto IV and LittleBigPlanet before cutting to one of those rib-tickling statements about the economic issues facing the industry and how he isn’t excited by anything in 2009.

“Next year, well, it’s all looking a bit dry. All the triple A titles came out this Christmas and while there is stuff in 2010 we can look forward to, off the top of my head I cannot think of anything next year that really excites me,” he said. “Everyone says games are good value for home entertainment, despite the relatively high price. I’m not so sure. I think we’re going to see a lot of price pressure put on games.”

I’m not convinced, like Molyneux, that 2009 is going to be dry. Jim recently tossed up an article illuminating the many valid titles that we have to look forward to. In reality, it’s just an off year for Lionhead. As for retailers fiddling with game prices, I’m all for it. I would love to be able to get my hands on Street Fighter IV at a discounted rate. I’ll happily run home screaming my thanks to the economic gods.
