After last week’s little game Little Wheel, I decided to make this week dedicated to the game that heavily influenced it and countless of other online flash games back in the day. Is Samorost older than the Internets? Yes. Is Samorost still an incredible artistic puzzle adventure flash game all these years later? Yes. It’s been a few years since I’ve played it for the fifteenth or so time, but even playing it yet again right now brings back good memories, and I’ve forgotten some of the puzzles so it’s still interesting.
For those of you who don’t remember Samorost 1 & 2 — or sadly never knew about these games back in the day of dialup — then all you have to do is watch the quick and silly story intro and start clicking. The art style for the level design comes from some very imaginative photo manipulation to make a very static game feel vibrant and alive. From the screenshots below you can tell it has a bit of a Wizard of Oz and Alice and Wonderland vibe to it, as well as some odd and creepy stoner elements. Combine that with some inquisitive looping music and you have the perfect thing to help you stay up later tonight, or to help you wake up tomorrow morning.
You can play Samorost 1 here, and part of Samorost 2 here. Both games come from the lovely Amanita Design group. Yes, the company that is bringing us Machinarium.
Got any flash game suggestions for next week’s midnight Monday Mind Teasers? Email me and I’ll put it to the test! Enjoy the trip down memory lane.
