If you’ve spent any time in the comments section of Destructoid, you’ve seen people get accused of being biased all the time, both editors and other commenters. Usually it’s just because someone has an opinion that another person disagrees with, but if you actually think about it we all DO have a few irrational biases relating to games.
For this month’s musing, I want you to explore your own biases regarding gaming and come clean about them. This is about the games, ideas, and/or platforms that you defend and get into arguments about. Note that this ISN’T about guilty pleasures — we did that topic already, and this isn’t about bad games no one else likes. How well the game is liked doesn’t matter — I want to know what games you find yourself getting into arguments about. What publishers make games you buy no matter what, regardless of what it is or if it’s even in a genre you like?
Figure out what your biases are, and tell us about them. What is it about these specific things that got you like this in the first place? Why do you think you get so riled up when you see someone talk bad about your platform of choice?
Alternatively, if you are perfect and are completely objective about everything, you can instead write something closer to an editorial relating to the issue of bias. Why are there Halo fanboys, but not Medal of Honor? How come the FPS genre in general has way more “biased” people, or accusations of bias, than the puzzle genre? Think of some other question I’m not asking related to bias, and answer it!
To participate, just click “Post A Blog” up there in the upper right of the screen, title your post “Teh Bias: WhateverYourTitleIs”, make sure you pick the “Monthly Musing” from the tag list (this is important!), write it up, and set it live. If your article is particularly well-written or sparks interesting discussion, we’ll stick it up on the front page. Don’t forget to read the the guidelines I whipped together last month. A good blog will get promoted regardless, but following all these rules will really help me out, and help get your blogs to the front page faster.
