Mundaun is a horror adventure across the sinister Alps

Illustrator Michel Ziegler went wild with penciled textures

If you’re into smaller-scale horror games, Mundaun is a name to remember until 2021.

Mundaun is a solo-developer game about exploring “an alpine world where reality and myth intertwine” to get to the bottom of your grandfather’s suspicious passing, a premise that’s made even more enticing with a mildly unnerving aesthetic. Look closely. Creator Michel Ziegler is doing cool stuff with “hand-penciled textures.” On the game’s dedicated site, you can even flip through his sketchbook.

There’s talk of a fear-based movement system, roaming creatures, sleigh riding, puzzle-solving, and an inventory to “keep you focused on collecting,” so don’t expect a simple mountainside stroll.

I can’t quite put my finger on why Mundaun looks so appealing, but I like its whole vibe. Along with a Steam release, Hidden Fields is planning to bring the game to PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
