Funcom, the developer that has run the Age of Conan MMO since 2008, is in line to make a new Conan the Barbarian game after a partnership with Conan Properties leaving Funcom as the main PC and console developer in the Conan world.
The MMO developer is also working on a spooky game called The Park set in the same world as its interesting Secret World MMO. The company needs a boost after reports a few months ago that it is flagging after poor performance by its LEGO MMO. A new Conan is one of three games the company will announce in 2016.
“We are tremendously excited to be strengthening our relationship with Conan Properties,” Funcom CEO Rui Casais said. “Conan the Barbarian is undoubtedly one of the world’s greatest and most recognizable fantasy heroes, and as game developers, working with such a character and being able to draw from the fantastically detailed world of Hyboria is nothing short of a dream come true.”
Aside from Funcom’s Conan MMO, the only other recent Conan game was 2007’s Conan, a typical God of War knockoff. I’m not sure how much cultural cachet the Barbarian has these days. It feels a bit like remaking Clash of the Titans in 2010. Or that 2011 Conan the Barbarian movie I completely forgot about. But Funcom will announce its new Conan game in January, 2016.
