New Dragon Quest looks like a Minecraft clone

Welp

Minecraft has no shortage of imitators, but I never thought Dragon Quest would be one of them.

Enter Square Enix with its latest creation, Dragon Quest Builders, a “block make RPG” that looks an awful lot like Mojang’s ludicrously popular sandbox game from what little we’ve seen so far.

It’s planned for a winter release in Japan on PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, and PlayStation 3.

Dragon Quest Builders is set in Alefgard, the setting from the first game in the series, which players will now need to restore (with blocks) after our old friend the Dragonlord devastates the countryside.

This reveal follows reports out of Japan Expo, where Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii indicated the Nintendo 3DS versions of Dragon Quest VII and VIII may be coming west — though Square Enix has since declined to officially comment on the matter.

Dragon Quest Heroes, an action-oriented spinoff from Dynasty Warriors developer Omega Force, is coming to North America and Europe this October and already has a sequel in the works.
