When I first saw the videos for Gardening Mama, I was more or less convinced I was going to pass on it. While I have enjoyed the Cooking Mama titles, the gameplay offered is such light fare that I alwasy find myself getting bored with it after a few hours and never picking up the game again, and I suspect Gardening Mama would have the same effect on me. It’s what Nick Chester would call a toilet game — good to play on the can, but not quite engaging enough to play the rest of the time.
Despite all this, I find myself wanting to play it again looking at these screens. Damn these games! I assume the reason for this is that I have a weakness to certain types of cute things, and the art style of these games is among them. Seriously though, I think it would be awesome to see these titles evolve into something further. For instance, blending the current gameplay in with a more detailed story that lets us get to know her a bit more as a character, for instance, or sending Mama on an adventure that lets her actually leave her own house. Mama on the town?
