Wildly impressive for this series
NieR is the little series that could, fueled by the pure passion of Yoko Taro.
It was always an outlier, a spinoff of the Drakengard franchise that became something more, until NieR: Automata catapulted it to fame. Unlike its predecessor it was well received critically, and as of this week, commercially.
Square Enix has announced that Automata, if you include both digital sales and shipments, has reached the two million unit mark. For reference, it took four months to push another half million units, as Automata was at the 1.5 million unit target in May. Positive word of mouth and all of the fanart probably have played a part in those long legs.
While Automata felt complete on its own, I wouldn’t mind seeing a follow-up on another planet dealing with new characters at some point. As long as Yoko Taro is allowed to do his thing again, I hope Platinum keeps working with Square Enix.
