Nintendo has announced that it is currently in negotiations to acquire Dynamo Pictures, a visual content company located in Tokyo, Japan. Once the deal completes later this year, the CG-heavy studio is expected to be re-monikered Nintendo Pictures, and will produce content for Nintendo going forward.
Nintendo has not specified exactly what role Nintendo Pictures will play in the future. Speaking in its public statement of intent, the legendary publisher succinctly states: “Nintendo has decided to acquire 100% of the outstanding shares (excluding treasury shares) of Dynamo Pictures and make it a wholly owned subsidiary to strengthen the planning and production structure of visual content in the Nintendo group.”
While it might be easy to jump to the conclusion that this acquisition will see Nintendo dive into the overcrowded market of TV and movie production, it should also be noted that the new subsidiary could simply be directed to produce trailers, showcases, montages, and CGI sequences for Nintendo’s various video game releases and live streaming events. Dynamo has previously worked with Nintendo on a series of cute Pikmin shorts, and has also produced CG content for a variety of video game and anime releases, including Death Stranding, Ghost in the Shell, NieR Replicant, Persona 5, and Monster Hunter World.
