Noita: Epilogue 2 update now out, adding dozens of spells, enemies, and materials years after the last update

Physics-simulated pixels go!

While it’s a given that just hearing the words “indie rogue-lite” send some gamers into eye-rolling spasms, Noita goes a few steps beyond most other examples of the niche. Even more so now, in fact, as Noita‘s just received the massive Epilogue 2 update, upgrading the title further still.

The Epilogue 2 update for Noita is the unexpected new content update for the legendarily reactive rogue-lite side-scroller. Physics-driven and random to a fault, Noita received its “final” Epilogue update back in 2021. The first Epilogue was, in every meaningful way, supposed to wrap Noita up in full and tie it down with a bow on top. Now, years later, we’ve got the similarly substantial Epilogue 2 content update to show for, and it’s a hoot with new spells, fixes, and more – all available for free for all owners of Noita.

Noita’s Epilogue 2 update is huge and incompatible with old save games

As per the official announcement from the developer Nolla Games, Noita‘s Epilogue 2 patch is sizeable. Before getting into the nitty-gritty of things, veteran players will be interested to learn that their old save games are not compatible with the new version of Noita. If you’ve got a run you’d like to wrap up before starting anew, Nolla Games has set up a special ‘update_20240214’ build of the game you can download via the Steam beta branch feature. Downloading this build of Noita will let you wrap up your run ahead of the Epilogue 2 version of the game.

Some of the most notable additions to Noita include:

  • 10 entirely new feature Spells: Sparkly Bounce, Lightning Bounce, Vacuum Bounce, Null Shot, Inner Spell, Giga White Hole, True Orbit, Hookbolt, Anti-Homing, Holy Lance
  • 8 new modifier Spells
  • 6 new enemy types, 3 new boss fights
  • 3 new secret spells
  • New materials, chemical reactions, items, and creatures

A variety of performance and stability updates are included as well, with a similarly sizeable list of bug fixes alongside it. Modders can expect to be able to draw upon a massive suite of new lua scripts, which is a huge boon all on its own.

Noita first launched in Steam Early Access back in September 2019, basically to immediate acclaim for its wacky sandbox gameplay driven primarily by the fact that every pixel is fully simulated in Noita. Fire burns, water flows, and magical drowning sand drowns monsters and mages alike. That’s just how it goes in Noita.

For all intents and purposes, Noita is now done and dusted, though Nolla Games hasn’t outright stated as much. In other words, an Epilogue 3 update may be on the horizon in a few years’ time. Though, if we’re being honest, Noita is hardly in need of new content, especially now.
