It’s always fun to see what makes it into the Best PC Game category on Destructoid every year, because the entries are all so eclectic based on the flexible nature of the platform. It’s that time of year again, and our PC nominees for 2021 are finally in: we’ve got adrenaline-fueled zombie shooters, adorable interpretations of the artistic process via an adventure game, and a new spin on a beloved, classic series, just to name a few. There’s pretty much something for everybody in this category alone, which really speaks to how much games have continued to grow and evolve over time.
It’s nice to see games like Eastward and Chicory: A Colorful Tale make the category, because their focus is on a slower-paced, more thoughtful experience. These are some of my favorite types of games, and I remember a time when something like this was inconceivable, or worse, thought of as a lesser experience because it didn’t lean into the more combat-focused origins of early video games.
The Forgotten City‘s nomination is notable because of its former status as a famous Skyrim mod before branching off into its own fully realized project. It really proves that with the right idea and some hard work, just about anyone can earn well-deserved success in the medium of video games. Hell, games as famous as Counter-Strike, Dota 2, and Garry‘s Mod all got their start this way, so it’s cool to see another underdog like The Forgotten City making its way into the category.
