Nvidia’s new PC monitors are giant and full of Big Dick Energy

They’ll only set you back $5,000

CES is a show that’s full of ridiculous prototypes and vague (and often unfulfilled) promises for a future launch. “Here’s a new phone with a 24-inch screen, a sedec-core processor, and an 8K display!” Stuff like that.

Last year’s CES had a flex from Nvidia that looked like another outrageous and excessive technological advancement that’d never actually come to fruition — at least from a consumer’s perspective. The Big Format Gaming Displays (BFGD), 65-inch monitors with legitimate high-end display features, were supposed to launch in the summer of 2018. That didn’t happen. But they’re back again at CES 2019 and now they’re set to release in February.

At least three manufacturers are on-board, as HP, Asus, and Acer have all been revealed as partners. The HP BFGD, called the Omen X Emperium, comes decked out with all the bells and whistles. It has 4K resolution with HDR, a 144Hz refresh rate, G-Sync, and Nvidia Shield and Google Assistant built-in. Additionally, it has an included soundbar that matches the display. HP’s take on the BFGD will run $5,000. Asus and Acer haven’t yet elaborated on their monitors.

All of this begs the question: Even if you can, should you? If you have the luxury of being comfortable enough to drop $5,000 on a monitor, is this an ideal monitor? Size aside, it has premium features. But is 65-inches too big to be ideal? Or is 30-some-inches the actual sweet spot? My analysis concludes there — nothing more than hypothetical question-asking and skepticism-laden doubts — because I will not be dropping five grand to find out.
