Payday 3 gets its first major expansion pack, Syntax Error

Rob those servers blind.

As one of 2023’s infamously problematic releases, Payday 3 has had to fight tooth and nail to eke out some stability for its players due to its always-online nature. Now, roughly three months after the game’s come out, Payday 3 receives its first major expansion pack, Syntax Error.

Following the “long and complicated” period of patching, Payday 3 developer Starbreeze Studios initially had to put its post-launch content plans on the back burner until the dust settled. That time has now come, from the looks of it, as Syntax Error introduces a high-tech new heist focusing on digital robbery. Alongside the heist, players also get three new weapons, and a suite of cosmetics to outfit their bandits with. The issue, though, is that it’s not all that affordable.

Payday 3: Syntax Error is a tad expensive

Payday 3: Syntax Error is priced at $17.99/17.99€, which is relatively steep for what is, in effect, a single new level and a few new usable items. On Steam, players have called the DLC “underwhelming and overpriced,” which has led to a ‘Mixed’ rating for it. Granted, it does seem that the new heist is pretty good, but even those reviewers who recommend it do not feel that it’s worth the baseline asking price.

Now, all Payday 3 players who own the Silver or Gold editions of the game have received the Syntax Error DLC at no additional charge, which should help the bundle go down a bit easier in the grand scheme of things. Yet, this sets the stage for the game’s second DLC at the very least, as it too is bundled in with the Gold edition of Payday 3, which might lead to poor ratings for it as well, regardless of its potential quality.

In the interim, for those who aren’t thrilled with the direction Payday 3 is going in, the recently revealed Den of Wolves may be of interest. Not least because Den of Wolves is being made by the devs of the infamously hardcore GTFO, some of whom had previously worked on the original Payday: The Heist.
