Phantasy Star Online 2 is coming to the west in 2013

Remember when Phantasy Star Online 2 was announced for the PC, and a few people were speculating that it would never see a western release? Well think again — Sega has just announced that they’re planning on bringing the free to play dungeon crawler to Europe and the US in early 2013.

For those of you who aren’t in the know, Phantasy Star Online 2 is the official sequel to the hit 2000 Dreamcast game PSO. It spawned many spinoffs, and the original itself was spawned from Sega’s Phantasy Star franchise. Like the rest of the franchise, PSO2 will not be an MMO, but rather an online dungeon crawler with a limited amount of players, similar to the Diablo series.

Producer Satoshi Sakai had this to say about the game: “The number one thing we want to provide players in Phantasy Star Online 2 is an adventure that changes every time they log in. Just as great table-top RPG experiences revolve around imaginative and unexpected encounters, we want players to consistently be surprised as they explore dungeons and undertake quests.”

If you’re so inclined, you can access the Japanese version right now, just by following community member Sir Tobbii’s YouTube guide. As a long time fan of the series, I couldn’t be more excited.
