Justice to be served as an Adult Swim special
In these fraught TV times, where your favorite shows are murdered and reanimated with reckless abandon, it’s understandable to feel like great shows are never bound to live long. And that’s exactly how fans of Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law have felt for the decade since its cancellation.
But there is hope. Sometimes, the clouds part, and you see a silver streak soar across the blue sky. You squint at it. What could it be? A bird? A man? A Birdman?
Yes! Our dreams are coming true. Birdman is returning to Adult Swim. Sort of, anyway.
With mingled excitement and sadness, Adult Swim has announced that Harvey Birdman will be making his return for a single half-hour special this fall. A half-hour seems downright puny, but hopefully those minutes will be packed with all the goofs any of us can handle. The show’s always been crowded with sight-gags, lightning cameos, and quick jokes, which has helped its legacy endure.
For the special, we’ll see Harvey as the most powerful attorney in America, as Phil Ken Sebben, now somehow president of the United States, has appointed him attorney general. And it sounds like it’s going to be up to Harvey Birdman to get Phil out of power.
The parallels are clear, but hopefully, the Harvey Birdman team will be able to inject fresh humor into the dried well of Trump parody that just about every other show is suckling at. That said, if Reducto doesn’t have some tangent about tiny hands, I will be disappointed.
Harvey Birdman, Attorney General will also reunite the original voice cast with Gary Cole, Stephen Colbert, and company all coming back to reprise their roles.
Growing up through the early days of Adult Swim, I’m definitely looking forward to this. Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law was one of the funniest and most endearing shows on the network’s original lineup, and getting to see some new material, no matter how slim it may be, will be a welcome treat.
