Productivity takes a blow as Zynga buys Drop7 developer

Edge is reporting that social gaming beast Zynga has acquired East Coast studio Area/Code, renaming it Zynga New York.

Now, news like this — social game company buys small dev to probably make other social games our readers don’t care about — generally doesn’t get reported here. But I’m making an exception, and the reason is Area/Code’s Drop7.

Seriously, have you played this game? It’s like some sort of number/puzzle crack. It’s available on the Android platform and iOS, and I’ve dumped countless hours into the game. In a 14-hour trip to Japan awhile back, I spent 10 of them playing Drop7 and the other four getting elbowed in the head by a hyperactive Japanese kid.

Anyhow, my point here is this: the combination of Zynga and Area/Code frightens the part of me that wishes to remain productive. The other part of me that just wants to waste way sitting in the corner playing a fun casual game looks forward to seeing what Zynga New York has up its sleeve.
