PS3 version of Mafia II getting free content on release

Mafia II isn’t even out yet but looks like we’re already talking about the game’s post-launch downloadable content. Granted, 2K’s hand may have been forced as the Trophies for the DLC were revealed early yesterday.

So here’s what you’re getting. On August 27, Mafia II will be released and with it will come a free voucher code exclusively for the PlayStation 3. “The Betrayal of Jimmy” as it’s called will follow a mercenary named Jimmy who’s doing dirty deeds for the mob. Players will go through dozens of “INTENSE” arcade-style missions in order to rack up points.

Yup, that’s what the DLC is all about. The points you’ll get will be posted to an online leaderboard system for all to see. “The Betrayal of Jimmy” will also be available for purchase on the PSN store for $9.99.

2K Games will then be releasing “Jimmy’s Vendetta,” another expansion for Mafia II. This DLC pack will be out for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC and offer more of the same as the “Betrayal” pack from the sound of things. The release date and pricing will be revealed at a later time.

The extra content doesn’t sound that inciting, but I do like how 2K trying to attract people to purchase a new copy in this manner. Maybe Electronic Arts should follow 2K’s lead here instead of charging $10 to play something online to detract used purchases of a game.
