The World Record for the most videogame character costumes in one place is only 425 costumes? That can’t be right.
It is right — technically. This report says that the judges from the Guinness Book of World Records did the official count of the participants at an October 5 event in Milwaukee. It was hosted by a costume company alled Buyseasons. This new record topped the old record of 276 people, set back in May of 2009 in London.
Here’s my beef with this record. I’ve covered wars events for this company for going on seven years now, and I’m certain I’ve been to several events that had more than 425 game-costumed attendees. I’m thinking of the larger gaming and anime conventions that I go to every year, where you can’t help but run into one of 50 or more big-crotched King of the Cosmos, or a dozen or more screaming Phoenix Wrights. Even a moderately sized fan con will have more than 5,000 attendees, and many of them are dressed up all weekend.
Someone needs to put this stupid “record” in its place.
