Resident Evil 7 has been welcomed to the family…the family of games that have sold more than five million copies! Capcom’s 2017 reformed take on Resident Evil isn’t ready to die yet.

Capcom announced the new sales milestone alongside the reveal that it won the Best VR Audio award at this year’s Game Audio Network Guild Awards. The five million statistic is slightly misleading though. Resident Evil 7 is actually up to 5.1 million sales now.

At this point, we’re a little more than 14 months removed from the game’s launch. Resident Evil 7 got off to a fast start, as it moved three million units in the first three weeks. Since then, it has picked up another 2.1 million. There aren’t any exact figures to support this, but December’s release of the Gold Edition (the version that contained all the add-ons) surely gave sales a late-year shot in the arm.

However, Capcom is still a long ways from its ultimate goal. Last May, the developer revealed that it hopes to eventually sell 10 million copies of Resident Evil 7. Given Capcom’s strategies in the past, that will almost definitely involve several re-releases on various new platforms. That’s a lot of ground to make up from ports. But, it also feels like Resident Evil 7 will probably hold up for years to come.
